What Do Certified Music Therapists Do?

Therapists often work with patients in a songwriting studio as part of music therapy.

The certified music therapists we work with at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital frequently use songwriting and recording with the patients to address psychosocial goals, provide an outlet for expression and empower the child to tell their story.

Our therapists facilitate songwriting and recording in patient’s rooms and also in our state of the art recording studio. The patient is in the driver’s seat, making all the decisions as the therapist steers the music to support the patient in the process. After the song is complete, the patient leaves with a CD of their work, providing concrete validation of their journey and experience.
