Two New Amazing Interns at UCLA Children’s Hospital

Welcome our two new interns: Kate and Shelby.

We are happy to announce two new interns beginning their 6-month clinical internship at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital! They will be trained by our amazing Music Therapist Jenna Bollard and will contribute so much to the program. These interns increase our impact by allowing us to see more children at UCLA Mattel.

Including an internship component in our programs greatly contributes to the field of music therapy by training music therapists to enter the workforce ready to work in pediatric medicine. This means more music therapists making a difference for hospitalized children all over the country.

Kate Comstock and Shelby Marnett are our two new interns, and we are so happy to have them. We can’t wait to hear about the music therapy miracles they perform at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital!

Kate Comstock:

Kate Comstock joins the music therapy intern team at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital after completing coursework in music therapy at California State University Northridge. An Idaho native, Kate completed her Bachelor of Arts, with an emphasis in vocal music, at the College of Idaho after returning from a year-long intensive study in vocal jazz at the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music.

Over the past year, Kate has focused her study on pre- and post-natal music therapy that encompasses the care of women during pregnancy and labor and delivery by use of music therapy assisted child birth (MTACB), as well as pre- and post-natal bonding for families.

Kate was recently awarded the Celeste Poll Student Scholarship, WRAMTA Internship Scholarship, and the WRAMTAS Conference Scholarship for her dedication and advocacy in the field of music therapy.  She brings her love of children and desire to work with families to UCLA, while utilizing music therapy as bridge to connect individuals with another modality of care.

Outside of the hospital, you will most often find Kate hard at work creating culinary delights in the kitchen and seeking travel adventures with her husband and two-year-old son.

Shelby Marnett:

Shelby is a musician and aspiring music therapist, and dabbles in latte art at Blacktop Coffee. After happily discovering choir and musical theater in middle and high school, Shelby began heavily investing her time in music, whether personally or on stage.

Following her high school graduation in Clinton, CT, Shelby completed a year at Simmons College in Boston for Special Education. With her passion for music still in the mix, she decided to incorporate that into her work with Special Education and came across the Music Therapy Department at Berklee College of Music.

Excited to dive into this internship, Shelby aims on focusing her future work as an MT-BC toward investigating music therapy’s impact on child psychology.

We are thrilled to have Kate and Shelby join the team! Are you interested in helping to expand our music therapy programs? Visit our contributions page to learn how.
