Treating the whole child with an integrative approach to pediatric
healthcare. We support music therapy programs in children’s
hospitals as well as medical research in childhood leukemia.
The Peterson Family Foundation's Focus:
Music Therapy and Childhood Leukemia Research
Our primary mission is to seek out and support experts and institutions dedicated to enhancing and improving the lives of children and teens afflicted by life-threatening and life-long diseases.
To support the whole child, we believe in an integrated approach to healthcare. We support medical research into childhood leukemia as well as music therapy programs to improve psychological and emotional well-being.

The hospital often focuses on what’s wrong, a problem the doctor needs to fix. Music therapy brings out the child’s abilities and gives them something to accomplish that emphasizes their talents and successes.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, San Francisco
Music therapy utilizes the power of music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual self to improve overall health. Music therapy treatment uses music to reduce a patient’s pain and anxiety, provides an opportunity for self-expression through songwriting and recording or non-verbally through instrumental music making, organizes coordinated movement in rehab, and reduces stress through guided relaxation, music listening and instrumental improvisation.
The Loh Lab
Since 2003 we have given $525,000 to support research and treatment for childhood leukemia
We support the pioneering research of Dr. Mignon Loh MD, the division chief of the pediatric hematology/ oncology fund, and Dr. Kevin M. Shannon, MD, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, UCSF. Our support continues to fund current leukemia research. This research is critical to improving treatment outcomes and clinical care.
The Peterson Family Goal
Our hope is that we can make things better for those on the difficult journey towards healing. Inspired by Karen Peterson’s spirit of kindness and empathy, one of the ways we achieve this goal is by bringing music therapy to kids across the US and Europe whose illnesses require a hospital stay.
